Mother’s Sally Lunn Bread
A basic bread recipe that is delicious!
Serves: 2 loaves
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 40 minutes

1 cup milk, scalded
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter, melted (or 3/4 cup oil)
2 teaspoons salt
1 package yeast, dry
1/2 cup water, lukewarm
3 eggs, beaten
5 cups flour, sifted

Combine milk, sugar, butter, and salt. Heat just a little but do not boil. Cool to lukewarm. Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water. Mix with milk mixture, add eggs, and blend well. Gradually add flour until smooth. Beat until all the air is out. Cover and let rise in a warm place until the dough has doubled in bulk. Stir down. Place on a floured board and shape into two loaves. Place in 2 greased 9 x 5-inch loaf pans and let rise again. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Bake for about 40 minutes or until golden brown. Old Southerners sometimes sprinkled loaf with sugar and ½ teaspoon nutmeg and served with 3 pints of sliced sweetened berries and fresh whipped cream for dessert.
