Cookies That Look Like Footballs!

 Football-shaped cookies are the hit of any football game party. Best of all, they're fun and easy to make. Plan to bake them with your kids the day before the party and store them in a tightly lidded container. And don't hesitate to decorate them in team colors, if you prefer that to the expected brown and white.

You can bake your own sugar cookies, following a favorite recipe that works well for cut outs (think Christmas cookies). Or, to make life easier, buy refrigerated sugar cookie dough in the supermarket. It may not taste as good as yours but it works well and makes life easy.

You will need two or three cookie sheets, a large baking rack or two small ones, a rolling pin, and a football-shaped cookie cutter. If you cannot find a football cookie cutter in the local kitchenware or craft shop, fashion several out of stiff cardboard (it's always a good idea to have extras).  

Clear an area of the kitchen that can become a cookie-cutout factory.

Pull out and grease the cookie sheets. Arrange the wire racks for cooling the cookies; and set out tools and accessories for decorating. You will need white decorating icing, the kind sold in tubes, for the footballs' laces. And you'll need chocolate icing to make the cookies resemble footballs.

Flour an area of your countertop and roll out the dough. To prevent sticking, lightly rub the rolling pin with flour.

Dip the cookie cutter in flour, too, and then stamp out the cookies. Transfer them to the cookie sheets.

If you use a cardboard template, cut around it with a small, sharp knife. Carefully transfer the cookies to the cookie sheets and bake them in a 350 degree F. oven (or the temperature recommended on the package). 

As the first batch of cookies bake, re-roll the scraps and cut out more cookies. Handle the scraps gently. If you overwork the dough, the cookies will be tough.

When the cookies are lightly browned around the edges and firm, remove the cookie sheets from the oven. Leave the cookies on the sheets for about 3 minutes and then lift them from the sheets with a thin-bladed spatula and transfer to a cooling rack.

Decorate the CookiesWhen the cookies are completely cool, start decorating.

Frost the sugar cookies with chocolate icing. Use storebought or make your own from confectioners' sugar, cocoa, and water or milk. Tint it with brown coloring, if you have it, to make it darker.

Use a piping bag, toothpicks, or a tube of white decorating icing to make the laces on the top of the football.

Instead of decorating these cookies as traditional looking footballs, the kids may prefer tinting white icing with food coloring and painting the cookies with team colors.
