How and When to Set Goals

Setting goals inspires us to take action to get what we want and understand what we need.

To achieve life's goals takes hard work and commitment, but first you need to identify them. Doing so helps you focus so that you can benefit from what is truly important in life.

To be effective, goals should reflect your passions and core beliefs. They are targets to work towards--and the journey can be as rewarding as the end result.

Goals do not need to be huge, life-changing events. They can be as simple as implementing an exercise routine or finding time for an art class--or as monumental as changing careers, repairing an entrenched family dispute, or working on spiritual growth.

Smart Goals
Reasonable goals are smart goals. They are:

  • Specific -- know exactly what you want to accomplish.
  • Measurable -- be able to quantify your success.
  • Achievable -- choose something that you can do.
  • Realistic -- assess your skills and your resources.
  • Timely -- set a sensible time frame for success.

Some Guidelines
Take time to outline how you will reach your goal. Begin by articulating it; if you can't explain it to yourself or your partner in a few words, re-evaluate it.

Write down exactly what you want, how you will get there, and how this achievement will improve your life. Writing crystallizes thinking. Use positive language.

Break down the necessary steps into manageable ones. Schedule deadlines and small advances. Review your progress regularly: once a week, once a month.

Identify any roadblocks preventing you from reaching the goal. List them and then overcome them. If you cannot overcome them, decide how to work around them.

Setting goals requires time, space, and quiet. Give yourself these gifts.

The Benefits of Goal Setting
Setting goals allows you to get what you want out of life. It also gives you direction and clarity of vision. When you succeed, you will get enormous satisfaction.

By making time for goal setting and working toward the goal, you are making a commitment to yourself. This purpose creates desire, which is the greatest motivator.

Anthropologist and author, Margaret Mead, said, "Success is the ability to pursue one's own goals."

With some clear thinking and good planning, success will be yours.
