How many times have you driven past the public library, thought about going in, but passed by on your busy way? Make an effort to stop -- libraries are more than shelves holding books. They are a vital part of the community and the world beyond!

For an especially enjoyable time, carve out an hour or two to visit the library with your toddlers and preschoolers. If they develop a love of reading and books, you will give them a lifelong gift -- and everyone will have fun in the process.

Here are five ways to insure you and your library have a remarkable relationship as the years go by.

  1. Visit the library with your children as soon as they can walk. Even toddlers enjoy looking at the books in the children's library. Make the library a familiar part of your child's life from a very early age.
  2. Take home piles of kids’ books to read to your toddler or preschooler. Enjoy the books while you have them and then when you and your children return them, pick out more. The kids will love these trips to the library and come to look forward to them.
  3. Borrow DVDs from the library to watch at home. Borrow children’s music CDs from the library to listen to in the car.
  4. Introduce your youngsters to the librarian and encourage them to ask questions. They will learn that the librarian is there to help them.
  5. Take toddlers and preschoolers to story hour, puppet shows, and other free events at the library. Exposing very young children to books and ideas helps their intellectual development.

The library is a rich resource that you, your kids, and neighbors will appreciate as the years go by.
